Our mission at Parwood TRC serves the special needs community ages 5 years and up. We provide equine related activities that faciliate physical and cognitive functions in direct relation to riding skills

Our vision is to provide the special needs community with an equal opportunity to reach a safe and applicable level of independence through achieving each riders desired goals and objectives.

Core value E.M.P.O.W.E.R.

Equine motion promotes optimum, wonderful, encouraging relationships.

The riders have various, and sometimes multiple, developmental disabilities. Cerebral palsy, spina bifida, muscular dystrophy, cancer, and orthopedic problems are some of the various disabilities that may be present. Autism, Down’s syndrome, pediatric stroke, brain damage, intellectual disabilities, learning disabilities, and emotional disturbances may also be some of the developmental disabilities facing our riders. Regardless of their handicap, the Parkwood program provides them with a sense of independence, freedom, and skillset while being in a therapeutic equine environment.

WHAT IS THE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN HIPPO THERAPY AND THERAPEUTIC RIDING?

Although a horse can be a tool used for both, the difference is in the rider’s DOCUMENTED goals/objectives, as well as in, who is facilitating them. A LICENSED Physical, Occupational, or Speech Therapists is the only individual that should be facilitating medically based therapeutic instruction. This would be Hippo Therapy. A CERTIFIED Therapeutic Riding Instructor should be teaching riding skills with the therapeutic value being an inadvertent benefit. The documentation surrounding the goal should reflect a riding skill/s only. This is Therapeutic Riding.
